About Time For Uke
How we got started .....
Members (L to R) Donna, Linda, Beth, Vince, Gladys and Lynn.
In the fall of 2010, three friends, Lynn Hodge, Donna Griffiths, and Linda Safford were getting together to play their ukuleles for fun. As retired (or soon to be) elementary music teachers in School District 71 (Comox Valley, B.C.), they had all taught ukulele in the school system for many years using the Doane Ukulele Method, but felt it was finally time to play "just for pleasure" with just a group of friends.
Stephen Hill, the Pastor at St. Joseph's Hospital, and a mutual theatre friend of Lynn, heard about her music group and invited them to play at a "Hospital Employee Appreciation" event for Christmas that year. Initially known as "The Ukulele Ladies", they invited bass player Al West to accompany them on upright bass. Very quickly, the name was adjusted to the "Ukulele Ladies and a Guy". The exhilaration of their first "public performance" soon set the wheels in motion, and their desire to do more was starting to blossom.
In a short time, other retired music teachers were enlisted, namely, Beth Hopkins, David Hopkins (sound engineer) Gladys Schmidt, Susan Archibald, and Vince and Charlene Sequeira (from Campbell River). In 2019 with Gladys retiring from performing, we added Brenda Geddert and Sue Diderichs. The common thread in the group was that we were all ukulele teachers and now had the "time" to devote to music making with the Ukulele! Thus, "Time For Uke" was the fitting name to which the group embraced, and has since entertained numerous audiences in the Comox Valley and surrounding region! In 2017 the group toured and performed to various audiences in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
